While you find puppy toilet training a challenging task to do, bear in mind that it is not impossible to train your dog to eliminate where you want him to go and prevent urinating/defecating all over the house. Commitment, coupled with your time will surely result to a reliably toilet trained puppy that is a joy to be around.

To start your way to successful puppy toilet training, here are some useful ideas for you:

  • Understand that young puppies cannot completely control their bladders or bowels. It is your responsibility to keep him off where he is not supposed to go and teach him your specified spot for urinating/defecating.
  • Successful puppy toilet training doesn't happen in just a snap of the fingers neither in a one day training session. It may take days, even weeks before you can finally say that your puppy is reliably trained.
  • Feed your pup with high quality dog food. Feed him, get up and go to bed close to the same time everyday. Then take your puppy to potty after every meal, after waking up in the morning and before bed at night. This will help him establish regular potty schedule.
  • Watch out for signs showing that he needs to go. Signs include circling, squatting, whimpering, sniffing the floor, sneaking off and heading for the door.
  • Determine what training method is appropriate for your pet. Some dogs respond well to positive training while correction based training works for others.
  • Expect for accidents to happen, and when they do - never punish your dog. Never rub his nose in the spot neither spank his rear for the mistake he committed. If caught in the act, distract him from doing it and immediately take him outside to finish his business.

One more thing to remember; don't forget to praise your pup after a job well done. You can even give him his favorite treat to show him that you like what he did and you want him to do it again and again.
