A puppy needs to be taken out at least every two hours.
Years and years before stuff like house training and "The Dog Whisperer," we thought it was enough to bawl out at the dog at every mistake it makes, to push it to its own mess so it does not forget, and so on. But now we know more in such a way that we can actually read into our pet's minds to see how everybody can get along. Here are some hints for house training your dog:
- Even the bathroom spot will need regular cleaning every day. First of all, regular cleaning helps avoid the danger of the spread of worms, viruses, and infections and most of all, the smell.
- Keep a schedule which will at least record the dog's time for being taken to his relief spot at night, at morning, after meals and naps, and that it deserves praise when it does its work. On the way to the relief spot, the dog should not be played with if the peeing or pooing is not yet over. If the dog does into relieve itself, then try putting him in the crate for a few minutes, then try again.
- Any mistakes in house training your dog can really be traced to the mistakes of those crate training, or house training the dog.
- Punishment is never the answer for mistakes. Scolding may make more sense if the dog breaks your clear understanding over the appropriate place to relieve itself. But in no case will the puppy deserve being spanked, screamed at, or pushed into the mess. Be sure about the cleanliness of the place by using an enzyme odor eliminator (If the odor of the waste stays, the dog may come back to relieve at that exact spot again.).
- Despite all this, if you think you cannot spare time nor a single thought to houstraining a dog, then you may want to buy, rescue or adopt an already house-trained dog from a shelter. What is clear is that puppies are quick learners when it comes to getting the front door opened or closed to them (even quicker than children who will take time to progress from diapers to underpants).
- One detail for concern is when a puppy is already four or five months of age and after many weeks of encouragement, still has regular accidents in the house. This may be a hint of a bladder infection, intestinal parasite problem, or other medical reason that prevents him from being ready to eliminate outside.
