It can be a challenge in labrador puppy obedience training when you have a pup that is an excessive barker. Sure, there will be respites in instances that you insist with a “Stop,” or a “Quiet.” But sometimes the dog simply seem “shut off” from listening to commands.

Instances of a rather ill-understood pet like these call for more patience and understanding as to why the puppy is barking its lungs out.

But if you are wondering if dogs really do get something out of barking, the answer can only be YES! Many dogs actually like barking for barking's sake. If so, train it to stop barking during labrador retriever obedience training by pulling on the leash each time it barks too much.

But there are also occasions when the dog's barking is for a legitimate reason, i.e. it feels a pain or ailment you need to attend to. Its also possible that the dog is frightened by a person or something in he environment; simply remove the dog from what is bothering him. It is also possible that the dog is bored; you can try saving more time in your day that you can spend on a walk or a game.

One thing you better not ever do in your labrador retriever obedience training is to turn the dog's barking into a game. This is obvious when you yell at the dog, and this simply causes it to bark some more.

Do you know your labrador's favorite treat? Keep these in handy, and give them to your puppy once it stops barking. This will help him stop barking for longer stretches of time.

An important aside is necessary here. The exercise requirement of breeds obviously vary; more exercise and training means less chances of developing bad habits like excessive barking. In particular, German Shepherd and Alsatian puppies need to have a lot of exercise and training as early as possible. If you have one of these or a related breed, you need to take the dog outdoors often to places where it is possible to run off-lead.
