Housebreaking is a simple enough process, but jack russells are a stubborn breed, and they will make this task a challenge if you are not consistent with your teaching. Furthermore, training your dog that he is to eliminate outdoors should be something that is started as soon as he is welcomed into your home. You never want to give your dog the impression that it is suitable for him to use your home as his washroom.

If you are having difficulties housebreaking your jack russells, or are preparing to welcome one into your home, you might find the following tips useful:

  • Only feed your pup 2-3 times per day (adult dog feed 1-2 times daily). If your dog does not finish his meal take his food away after 10 minutes. This will put a stop to creating a food-on-demand Jack russell terrier. Successful housetraining depends on a feeding schedule.
  • Do not feed your puppy after 6 p.m. because it takes approximately six hours for your dog to digest his food. Feeding him any later will break his elimination schedule and he may feel the urge to relieve himself after bedtime.
  • Take your dog out after he eats, and frequently throughout the day. If he is a pup, every one and a half or two hours should suffice.
  • Take your jack russell to the same spot for urination/defecation. He will likely learn faster, as he will associate this spot with the deed.
  • Do not allow your pooch free run of the house if he is not fully trained, because this is literally an accident waiting to happen. Block him in an area where he is free to roam until he is housebroken.
  • Praise your dog when he eliminates outside. Praise is a must for all training, and housetraining is no exception. Your jack russells want to please you.
  • If your jack eliminates in the house, only discipline him if you catch him in the act. Do not punish a dog upon finding the mess, or they will not understand what you are mad at them for. Moreover, use a constructive disciplining method. If you catch your pooch in the act. Tell him a sharp "No", pick him up and place him outside. If he finishes his business outside, praise him immediately. When disciplining your dog, you need to make sure that you are only giving him the idea that soiling the house is wrong, and not that relieving himself is what displeases you.

You should also know that if your usually trained and well-behaved jack russells begin soiling the house, this could be a sign of a physical problem. Have your dog examined by your veterinarian.
