Responsible breeders should work hard to eliminate various hereditary diseases in the breed.

As soon as you begin your hunt for dachshund breeders you will discover that there is a variety to choose from. Dachshunds are a very popular dog, which means they are in demand. Unfortunately, not everyone who breeds doxies is reputable or responsible. Sadly, some are in the business for one purpose only - to make money.

How can you find good dachshund breeders? The best place to begin your search is by locating a breeder through your countries kennel club or dachshund club. These organizations will point you in the right direction, because they will only referrer you to breeders with sound reputations.

Nevertheless, despite where you may discover a breeder you are interested in, before you contact this individual, you need to do your dachshund homework and prepare a list of important questions to ask. What should you inquire about? Ask dachshund breeders...

  • Where do you keep the puppies - in your home or at a kennel?
  • Are the puppies socialized with other people and dogs?
  • Do you provide the puppies with any form of training?
  • How many litters do you produce a year?
  • How many dogs participate in your breeding program?
  • Are the dachshund pups checked by a veterinarian and have they received any vaccinations?
  • What should happen if I am no longer able to keep the dog, will you take the dachshund back, or do you have any other policies?
  • May I see the sire or dam of the pup?
  • What is the pedigree of the puppies' parents?
  • Can I register my puppy with the kennel club?
  • May I see the dog prior to making my purchase?

It is imperative that you find out everything you can about a breeder and see the environment where the puppies are born and raised before making any final decisions, or sign contracts. You should also obtain references from the dachshund breeders, and follow up on them to find out the experience of other customers.

Finally, remember that quality dachshund breeders care about the dogs they produce. Therefore, they will not only provide them with a hearty and happy living space, they will also do their best to ensure the breed remains strong and healthy. Furthermore, they will want to know who you are and your dog experience, to make certain their pups are going to a good home. Thus, it is important that you learn all you can about dachshunds, so you can ask good questions and make it clear that you are serious about this particular breed.

I have a mini dash. She is house trained if we are home, she comes and gets us and goes outside. Here is my problem. She is 2 - she was fostered for 6 months - the foster couple trained her to poo outside, but to pee in the kitchen on linoleum flooring. I have tried everything - if we lock her in the crate, she pee's in it. She has run of the kitchen all day and usually I am gone about 4 - 6 hours and she pee's 4 or 5 times. She never pee's inside when we are here. I am at the end of the rope here. I love this little girl, but for the life of me, I don't know how to break the pee on the kitchen floor. She has never had an accident pee or poo in the actual house - ever! My husband said there is no way to break her because they trained her that way. And like I said, she even pee's in her crate. Any suggestions. I bought pee pads, she won't use them. I am also wondering if it is normal for her to have to pee every 2 hours. She self feeds and waters - drinks from a bowl and has a bottle on her crate. Any helpful advice? It's easy to clean up, but it is really getting old. As 2, I would have thought this phase would be over
