For people who are not familiar with the breed, it may come as a surprise that miniature dachshunds exist. Many breeds have more than one size in their canine family, and the dachshund is no different. It might seem strange that there is a mini doxie, considering this type of pooch is already a relatively small dog; however, the miniature is only slightly smaller than the standard variety.

Are there many other differences between standard and miniature dachshunds aside from the size? While there are a few aspects that can be compared, on the whole the temperament and overall appearance of the two types are relatively similar. To give you a better idea of what the differences and similarities are, the following is a brief outline:

Differences

  • Size - The miniature weighs about 11 pounds or slightly less, stands at a height of 5 - 6 inches, and has a chest measurement that ranges between 12 and 14 inches when fully grown. The standard, on the other hand, averages a weight of 16 - 32 pounds, has a height of 8 - 9 inches, and the chest of an adult measures over 14 inches.
  • Traditional breeding purpose - While the original dachshund was bred to be a badger hunter, miniature dachshunds were bred for hunting rabbits to stop them from destroying crops. Their light and smaller size gave them easier access to enter rabbit burrows.
  • Showing - Not all kennel clubs, including the American Kennel Club, recognize the miniature dachshund as an official size or a separate classification from the standard. In fact, in America, miniatures are generally called "tweenies". Although the smaller variety can compete in shows, they are placed in a class division that consists of dogs 11 pounds and under.

Similarities

  • Appearance - Both doxie types are available in three coat varieties: smooth haired, wire haired and long haired. The different coats tend to produce a unique personality in the dogs, but sometimes the difference in personality is simply a matter of the dog and not its coat. The body is long, well muscled and compact. Legs are short, solid, strong, and built for digging. Ears are large and floppy and are positioned close to the top of the head. Eyes are oval in shape, medium in size and are dark rimmed. The muzzle is finely formed, the nose is black, and the head tapered.
  • Temperament - Like their bigger brothers, miniature dachshunds are smart and intelligent. They can be quite stubborn, independent, mischievous and courageous. They are protective of their home and family, get along well with responsible children, and are very affectionate. All dachshunds enjoy barking, digging, and hunting.

You will discover when it comes down to it, regardless if you were to have miniature dachshunds or the standard breed, both are loving companions and beautiful dogs that will ensure your life is anything but boring.
