A dachshund dog needs schedules; they thrive on them. Establishing a routine for your dog not only helps them to adjust to their new home, but also helps them understand where they fit in their pack. Not to mention, creating a schedule also makes owning a dog much easier for you.

Since schedules make for a happy dachshund dog and provides them with a sense of security, you may be wondering what aspects in their lifestyle you should schedule. Essentially, you should establish routines for almost every activity, including playtime. Hence, create a schedule for...

Food - You should feed your dachshund around the same time every day. It does not matter how many times you feed your dog, make sure every meal has the same portion and that you remove the food dish after 10 minutes, even if the meal was not fully eaten. You want to teach your dog that they are fed only at certain times and they cannot eat whenever they like. You don't want to create an eat-on-demand pooch.

However, keep in mind that while you should create a feeding schedule for your dachshund dog, fresh water should always be made available.

Elimination - A food schedule will help you to better judge when your dachshund needs to eliminate. Always take your dog out shortly (10-15 minutes) after meals. You should also take him outside anytime you think he may have to go. This is important because you don't want to run the risk of an accident occurring inside. Note: remember that puppies will need to go out more frequently than an adult dachshund dog, especially when in the process of house training.

Walks and playtime - It's important that you provide yourself and your dachshund dog with everyday exercise. Taking him for regular 15 - 20 minute walks (I.E. In the morning before you go to work and in the evening after dinner) will not only provide him with exercise, it also socializes him and gives you bonding time. Additionally, your dog should have play time and training sessions separate from the walk. This will ensure that you are giving your pal plenty of attention, which will help prevent destructive behavior.

You will find that creating schedules for your dachshund dog is something you will both enjoy, as he will receive your attention and authority, and in turn be a more loving and well behaved canine companion.
