Many dog owners and dog trainers consider clicker training dachshunds to be the most humane way of teaching them various desirable commands and behaviors while helping to eliminate undesirable behavioral problems. Training dachshunds with a clicker is based upon well researched and extensively practiced methods of behavioral science for clearly communicating and interacting with dogs. With an understanding of how dogs think and learn, clicker training dachshunds allows a practical application of knowledge for making your dog a better companion and pet every day.

Using a clicker for training dachshunds is a reward-based method of training. It requires you to be consistent in repetitions and positive reinforcement as well as co-operation with your dog. By using the clicker, you don't need any form of harsh corrections and the training process will be much more fun for both of you.

Clickers were first used for training dolphins, but the technique was brought over to dogs by Karen Pryor. The training trend then took off in the 1990's as people began to realize how inexpensive, simple, and humane the method truly is.

The clicker used for training dachshunds is a simple plastic device about the size of a keychain. It has a button attached to a metal strip that makes a distinct, clear, consistent sound when it is pressed. When training dachshunds, the sound provides precise feedback to the animal. Essentially, the click becomes an instant form of reassurance that the dog has behaved in a desirable way. It is a very motivational technique for learning and behaving properly.

Clicker training works in six basic steps:

1 - Encourage the desired behavior to happen. For example, use a lure, shape it yourself with your dog, let it occur naturally, etc.

2 - The moment the desired behavior happens, mark it with a click.

3 - Reinforce the behavior with a reward, such as praise, treats, etc.

4 - Generalize the behavior by practicing it in different places with increases in duration, distractions, and distance between you and your dog.

5 - Cue the behavior by adding hand signals and verbal commands such as "come" or "sit".

6 - Gradually reduce the use of the clicker and the treats so that the commands and/or hand signals are enough on their own.

This positive and gentle method of training dachshunds will build a stronger bond between you and your companion while building your dog's confidence and avoiding harsh corrections.
