Long-haired chihuahuas typically shed less. They require no trimming and minimal grooming.

A long haired chihuahua is identical to their shorthaired brothers in every aspect except for the obvious fact that their bodies are covered in long feathery fur, giving them an appearance that is not unlike a Pomeranian. Therefore, if you prefer the long-haired chi you should still expect a loving and devoted dog that is small, alert and full of spunk.

Although it is only the coat that makes the long haired chihuahua different, it is a difference that matters, especially when it comes to grooming. Chis with long fur have smooth undercoats and long overcoats. While their full body is covered in a generous amount of hair, the longer and more feathery areas include the ears, tail, front legs and mane.

Long haired chihuahua coat colors include:

  • Black
  • White
  • Chocolate
  • Fawn
  • Brindle
  • Merle
  • Silver
  • Blue Gray
  • Tri-color (blue, black or chocolate with white and tan markings)

Chis with long coats should be brushed daily to remove dirt and knots from the coat. This will help prevent mats and also works oils through his fur to keep both skin and coat healthy. You will require a soft slicker brush and a metal comb for your chi. Be very gentle when grooming, as your pet is quite fragile and can be easily injured if you are too aggressive or forceful when brushing. Take your time, talk to your chihuahua and praise him. Make it a comfortable and a rewarding experience.

Long-haired chihuahuas need to be bathed regularly, approximately once a month. Only use dog shampoos when bathing your chi, and remember that your dog needs to be washed on a non-slip surface, all soap must be removed from his hair, and he should be dried thoroughly. You also need to take great care in making sure no water enters your pet's ears to discourage any health issues from occurring.

Finally, there are many cute outfits for chis but because a long haired chihuahua has an abundance of fur, you shouldn't dress him up in the summer time, as he can become overheated and be very uncomfortable. That said, you should provide him with a coat in the winter when it is cold, as his hair will not be enough to keep his small body warm.

I have a 9 month old Chi named Swag. In Florida it gets hot. I wanted his coat to flow naturally but I wonder how uncomfortable he will be. Funny though. He still wants a blanket to cover him while in pet friendly restaurants.

I have a a LH chi named Gracie and she is the sweetest thing in the world. I would never have to worry about her biting or growling at anyone. Worst thing is she sheds!!!
