While many used to see crate training as inhuman, this strategy is seen nowadays as an effective tool for training a dog of whatever breed. Labradors are a dog breed that stand to benefit a lot from this strategy, since they are large and active dogs which turn physically rough if bored and lonely. Crate training is therefore the answer to arresting any risks of destructive behavior. Moreover, crate training brings down fear and insecurity, and other problems rooted in stress in your dog.
Crate training here means the use of a plastic crate or wire cage to keep a pet when the family is not home or is not capable of supervising the dog's daily routine and activities.
To understand how is it possible that dogs can appreciate a small and rather secluded den, we need to remember that dogs are the descendants of den animals. This means they not only find it natural to rest in small and secluded areas, but they even feel safe there.
Crates are either produced in plastic or wire mesh. Plastic crates usually come in handy during airline travel, and are referred to as kennels. The difference with wire crates is that these former ones do not give so much ventilation and they are less easier to hide and store away.
Crates are ideal chocolate labrador retriever training tools for housebreaking your dog. As we have seen above, dogs are den animals that dislike having dirt and waste in their sleeping zones. Keeping dogs in crates therefore teaches them to “hold it” until they are allowed to go outside. If you have a rescue dog at home, then remember that their accidents at home are usually due to stress. Use a crate, combined with scheduled visits outdoors to help fix any concern on irregular elimination.
When is a good time to stop crate training? There is no way to answer this outright. Some dogs, not necessarily labs, will even need a crate for years to come. Some labs will need them less and less as they end their adolescence.
The best place to put the crate is usually where people also are, e.g. kitchen, den or bedroom.
Helpful Hints
1. The crate needs to be large enough to stand and turn around.
2. A few adult dogs must not be kept cooped up for more than continuous 8 hours; but most of the time most adult dogs must not be kept crated for more than 4 to 6 continuous hours.
3. But even if the dog soils its crate, it must not be punished. Giving the dog the opportunity to pee or poo is already your responsibility.
Being knowledgeable in the crate training of your pet has got to be one of the most beneficial things you can accomplish in your program for labrador retriever training. Doing so will make your bond with your labrador many times enjoyable.
